5 Ways to Keep Your Cat at a Healthy Weight

Your cat is more than a cute, sleepy ball of fur. Fluffy is a friend and companion, and an important part of the family. As a good cat owner, you’ll want to do everything you can to keep your feline buddy happy, healthy, and purring as long as possible. One of the best things you can do for your pet is to keep her at or near her ideal weight. Obesity can cause some very serious health problems in cats! A Niwot, CO veterinarian offers tips on keeping your furball trim and slim in this article.

Make sure Fluffy has lots of fun toys to play with. Classic cat toys, like catnip mice, are fine. You can also get your furball a robotic mouse, or another automated toy.

Cat Furniture

Cat trees, catwalks, kitty tunnels, and pet towers all promote healthy activity. You can of course buy your feline friend’s furniture, but you can also make your own. For instance, an old wooden stepladder can be repurposed into a great cat tower. Just add planks to widen out the steps and make them into boards, and then wrap the whole thing in sisal rope.

Proper Serving Sizes

Overfeeding is another major cause of feline obesity. Just giving Fluffy a few too many calories a day can cause her to pack on a pound a year. That may not sound like very much, but it’s quite a bit for a kitty! Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations, including portion sizes.

Good Nutrition

While feeding your furball kibble does have some benefits, cats that eat only dry food may be more likely to become obese than those who eat wet food. This is because many types of kibble, particularly lower-quality brands, are high in carbs. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Take time to play with your cat every day. Even spending just a few moments pouncing and jumping will benefit your feline friend. If your kitty plays fetch, indulge her by tossing a small toy for her to bring back. (Actually, if you toss a cat toy across the room, Fluffy will probably run after it, even if she doesn’t bring it back.)
